Hillhaven is supervised housing for almost-independent, companionable, nonsmoking elderly. It was built in 1998 specifically for elder housing with live-in assistants. It’s a 2-story building and residents live on one floor or the other, with views of Lake Superior about 150 yards away or Superior National Forest which is directly out our back door.
We are a very sweet alternative to a nursing home because when you live here, it feels like you’re living in a large house with some friends. Each floor has 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and common space for communal dining and living room with a wonderful view. Meals are home-cooked and delicious and snacks are available all the time.
Since the owners are health care professionals (Becky is a Physical Therapist and Loren is a Chiropractor), the expertise brought from those realms are an added benefit to the residents as needed. Balance, strength, flexibility, walking difficulties, pain and nutritional issues can be evaluated here and included in each resident’s individualized care plan.
One of our missions is to be the provider of choice and the employer of choice for elder housing in Cook County. One of our residents has been here since the doors opened in 1998 and she wants to stay here forever. Our wonderful Hillhaven Helpers (all nursing assistants or other health care training) are long-term employees and provide the service consistency that our residents need and appreciate.
Memory loss can be challenging. We can accommodate mild to moderate memory loss at Hillhaven unless the resident would wander away. Staff has training in memory issues and we continue to upgrade our education annually in many areas. We are not considered a “memory care unit” and residents are not locked inside.
